Born April 11, 1937, in Yeagertown, he was a son of the late Joseph Foster and Cleone Tony (Fultz) Tate.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: six brothers; Rodney (in infancy), William, Robert, Lee, David and Jerry Jed Tate; and two sisters, Marjorie Allen and Shirley Noland.
Donald is survived by: his wife, Joyce E. (Stutts) Tate, whom he married Sept. 15, 1956; four children, Lori Bankert and husband, Michael, Donald P. Tate and wife, Kim, Kelly Banks and husband, Tad, and Gregory Scot Tate, all of Lewistown; 12 grandchildren, Matthew Logue, Nathan Logue and wife, Krista, Jennifer Sprunger and husband, Michael, Olivia Bankert, Nicholas Bankert, Samantha Bankert, Christopher Tate and wife, Ashley, Kari Kenepp and husband, Jeremy, Tabitha Newton and husband, Greg, Justin Wendorf and wife, Carrie, Jessie Reed and husband, Michael, and Gregory Tate and wife, Lauren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and siblings, Neil Tate and wife, Joann, Camilla Batipps and Kay Richard, all of McClure.
He graduated from Chief Logan High School, Class of 1956.
He was a member of Lewistown Christian and Missionary Alliance Church.
Donald was employed by Standard Steel for more than 35 years in multiple positions, retiring in 1999.
He coached youth wrestling at the Burnham YMCA for many years and was an avid Penn State fan. Donald also enjoyed cooking and was an outstanding poetry writer. In his earlier years, he was a board member of Mifflin Countys Shelter Services and a member of the Yeagertown Lions Club. Donald had a big heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed.
A viewing will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes, Woodlawn, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 19, 2018, at the funeral home, with Reverend Neil Breneman officiating.
Interment will take place in Westminister Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown.
