VILLA GROVE – Stephen L. Howard, 77, of Villa Grove died at 1:31 a.m. on Thursday (Feb. 15, 2018) at Amber Rose Assisted Living, Tolono.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 19, 2018, at Joines Funeral Home, Illinois 130 S., Villa Grove, with Pastor Duane Piercy officiating. Burial with military rites by Villa Grove VFW Post 2876 will be at Villa Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, at the funeral home.
Stephen was born June 1, 1940, in Tuscola, a son of William and Iva (Dallas) Howard. He married Madeline G. Stevens on Oct. 28, 1962. She survives in Tolono.
Also surviving are one son, Kevin E. (Stacy) Howard of Highland; two daughters, Cheri L. (Jay) Bonds of Allerton and Tamara A. Smith of Villa Grove; two brothers, Walter (Maryann) Howard of Decatur and Larry (Patti) Howard of Sentatobia, Miss.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Stephen grew up and resided in Villa Grove his whole life. He graduated from Villa Grove High School and was very active in all sports during high school.
He was in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962.
He was a supervisor at Cabot Corporation in Tuscola and retired in 2005 after 30 years.
Stephen also coached many summer recreation baseball and softball teams over the years and umpired many games as well. He enjoyed fishing, working in the yard and spending time with his grandchildren.
