OBITUARY: James "Jim" Clement, December 06, 1944 - February 14, 2018 - reprinted from the Caturia, Smidt & Starkson Funeral Home website

James “Jim” Edward Clement, age 73 of Hastings, died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on Wednesday morning, February 14, 2018.

Jim, the son of William and Arlyne Clement, was born on December 6, 1944, in Madison, Wisconsin. He was the youngest of three children. Captain of his football team, Jim graduated from Prairie du Sac High School. He went on to receive his chemical engineering degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He met his wife, Bette, during a summer internship in her hometown of Rothschild. They married on October 25, 1969 in Wausau, Wisconsin.

Before starting their family, Jim and Bette lived in Southern California, where Jim learned to sail on the Pacific Ocean. In 1973, Jim took a job at Flint Hills Resources (formerly Koch Refinery), and they moved to Hastings. Their daughter, Sara, was born in Korea and arrived in 1977, followed by their son, Matthew, born in 1978. Jim retired from Flint Hills as a project manager in 2002.

Jim enjoyed spending time at the cabin with family and friends; during summers at the lake, he taught countless kids how to waterski. He was an avid golfer and Packer fan, and he enjoyed skiing and playing cribbage. He was a constant presence at his children’s activities and sports, and a member of St. Philips Lutheran Church.

Jim is survived by his wife, Bette; his children, Sara and Matt (Celina); grandchild, Rhys; his sister Sharron Johnson; and many friends in the community.

A celebration of Jim's life is planned for April 29, 2018 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., with a Memorial Service at 1:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Schaar's Bluff Gathering Center at Spring Lake Park Preserve, 8395 127th Street East, in Hastings.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to St. Philip's Lutheran Church, 1401 West 15th Street in Hastings, MN or to the National Park Foundation in his memory. The Foundation can be accessed at https://www.nationalparks.org/support

Arrangements are being completed by Caturia, Smidt & Starkson Funeral Home & Crematory of Hastings.
