Muncie – George and Maryellen Oakley passed away on Valentine’s Day, twenty-three hours apart from each other. Maryellen passed away due to a sudden stroke and George followed after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease.
George William and Maryellen Oakley lived in and raised their family in Muncie for 66 years.
Born in 1933 in Anderson, Maryellen (84), was adopted at birth to loving parents John and Florence Mauck. She was a member of the first graduating class of the Muncie School of Practical Nursing (1954) and retired from Ball Memorial Hospital after over 50 years as a licensed practical nurse. She enjoyed painting and traveling with close friends.
George (92) was born in a log cabin near the village of Rutledge Hill, TN, in 1925 to John F and Nancy Ellen (Campbell) Oakley. After graduating from Manchester High School, George served in the Army during WWII. After his service, he moved to Muncie, and worked at Warner Gear for 30 years. An avid urban beekeeper and organic gardener, George loved nature and the outdoors. He always enjoyed an opportunity to share his knowledge of country ways with grand- and great-grandchildren. He was a member of the American Legion.
They are survived by four children and their families: Sherry Simmonds of Muncie, IN; Jeffrey and Loma Oakley of Estill Springs, TN; Valerie Oakley of Lafayette, IN; and Brenda Oakley and Inga Ford of Oakland Park, FL. Five grandchildren include Holly Hicks (Tom), Melanie Howe, Jared Heath, Luke Hicks (Kassandra), and Ashley Cates (Brandon). Six great grandchildren: Spencer, Emily, Addison, Lily, Victor, and Amara.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Kindred Hospice for all the love, care, and support shown to George and Maryellen.
