John was the son of Henry "Harry" (1813) and Alice Murley (1816) Ellis of England who were married on 25 July 1835 in Sennen, Cornwall. His siblings were Jane (1838), Ann "Nanny"(1841), William Henry (1844), Elizabeth (1847), Thomas (1850), and James (1855). John was married to Agnes Eddy on 10 December 1872 in Penwith, Cornwall, England, and had five children with all five surviving: Elizabeth Jane (1873)(Eddy), John (1875), James (1878), Harry (1880), and Agnes Eddy (1884). John was a miner and immigrated about 1891. He died from tuberculosis at the age of 58 years and 10 months.
