Dale LaVerne Felten, 65, died of natural causes unexpectedly at his home on Peysenske Lake near Park Rapids, Minnesota, on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018.

Dale was born Dec. 22, 1952, in Austin, Minnesota, to LaVerne and Jane Felten as the second of five children. He attended St. Augustine Catholic School and Pacelli High School, graduating in 1971. Dale was a gifted athlete, earning All-State and All-Region awards in basketball and All-Conference in football. He continued his athletic career with a very successful basketball team for two years at Austin Junior College. Dale was recently voted into the Pacelli High School Athletic Hall of Fame for induction in June of 2018.

He married Susan Denison and went to work for Hormel Foods while continuing his college degree at Mankato State University in education. Upon graduation, he began teaching and coaching at Wanamingo High School. They moved to Virginia, where they later divorced. He taught and coached at Brentsville High School in Virginia for over 30 years.

Dale was a passionate teacher and coach who helped shape the lives of many young people during his career. Dale was a wonderful uncle, brother and also humorously earned the title of “favorite son!” Dale’s good humor and generous nature, combined with his no-nonsense approach to life, earned him many life-long friends with which he shared his love of fishing, golfing, hunting and other sporting events.

He is survived by his special friend, Chris Bushaw, Rochester, Minnesota; his father, LaVerne Felten, Austin; sister, Kay Brown, Fort Collins, Colorado; brothers, Gary (Susan) Felten, Cornville, Arizona, Jim (Jeanne) Felten, Woodbury, Minnesota, and Ron (Kimberly) Felten, Austin; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Jane Felten; brother-in-law, Mike Brown; nephews, David Brown and Joshua Williams.

He will be greatly missed.

A memorial celebration will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, February 22, at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with Father James Steffes officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service on Thursday.
