Second wife of John Freeman Barkdull. Married on 12 Nov 1816 in New Lisbon, Columbiana County, Ohio.Sarah was born Sarah Kennedy in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. What little is known of her beginnings was passed word-of-mouth as family lore, but does seem to check out.
Sarah was born 29 Jul 1790 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania.

Sarah's first marriage was apparently to a man with the surname Dicks, as she was married for the second time---to John Barkdull, on 16 Nov 1816 in Columbiana County, Ohio---under the name Sarah Dicks. (Vol. 1803-1848, p. 261, solemnized by Clement Vallandingham) Family information says that she was a Kennedy, though, and Sarah and John's first child was named Robert Kennedy Barkdull.

Sarah's father is Robert Kennedy born 1751 in Basking Ridge,Somerset,New Jersey. He died in 1824 in Lisbon,Columbiana,Ohio. He married in 1778 in New Jersey to Lena Van Sickle born 14 Nov 1756 in Readington,Hunterdon,New Jersey and died 1819 in Williamsfield,Ashtabula County,Ohio.

John and Sarah raised four children (two boys and two girls), in addition to the children from John's first marriage to Nancy Slater. (It is unknown whether Sarah's first marriage produced children.) Her children with John were: Robert Kennedy Barkdull (1817-1870), Mialma Jane (Barkdull) Stebbins (1823-1906), Silas F. Barkdull (1827-1898) and Sarah Mahala (Barkdull) Ennis (1830-1911).

After removing from Columbiana County, Ohio, to Union County, Ohio, they eventually traveled to Iowa in a wagon train that included (according to family tradition) Silas and Sarah Mahala Barkdull. According to the same family tradition, Sarah Mahala met Andrew Jackson Ennis when his family joined the wagon train, and they were later married. Eventually the wagon train reached Illinois Grove, where Sarah (Kennedy) Barkdull died at the age of 65.

Family tradition says that she died in "Illinois Grove, Story County, Iowa." Illinois Grove is today in Marshall County, Iowa.** But Story County is contiguous with Marshall County, and Illinois Grove is currently near the Marshall/Story County boundary. As county borders were constantly in flux, it's likely that Illinois Grove was once in Story County.

After his wife's death, John Barkdull eventually moved on to Illinois, where he died in Mercer County at the age of 82 (just three weeks shy of his 83rd birthday).
