Harry N. "Whitey" Cummings of Tilghman passed away Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He was 73.

Born June 15, 1935, he was the son of the late Andrew and Anna Rimmer Cummings. "Whitey" spent his life on Tilghman Island, where he was a painter and commercial waterman. He loved seafood, especially oysters, and working on projects in his shed. Most of all he loved his family, and spent a lot of time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Cummings is survived by his wife of 55 years, Evelyn L. Cummings; two children, Linda Gottleib and her husband Mark, and Harry Cummings and his wife Denise, all of Tilghman; two brothers, Calvin Cummings and his wife Betty of Tilghman, and Clifton Cummings and his wife Betty of Bethlehem; two sisters, Sandra Ropchock and her husband Joe of Tilghman, and Sharon Hock and her husband Sonny of Sherwood; seven grandchildren, Jammie, Ann, Jesse, Brooke, Markie, Brittany and Blake; and nine great-grandchildren, Samantha, Chanler, Noah, Madison, Payton, Raleigh, Owen, Morgan, Hunter, and one on the way.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Andrew Cummings and Frank Cummings; and two sisters, Lula Mae Aerne and Frances Cummings.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at Tilghman United Methodist Church, where friends may call one hour prior. Burial will be at the Tilghman Wesleyan Cemetery.
