Dutch Statesman. He served as the Prime Minister of the Netherlands from November 4, 1982 to August 22, 1994. Born Rudolphus Franciscus Marie Lubbers, he studied economics at the Erasmus University Rotterdam where he was a student of Nobel Prize laureate Jan Tinbergen. After graduating, he had planned on going into academics, but instead went into his family's construction and machinery fabricating business. He worked at his family's business until 1973 when he was asked to serve as minister of economic affairs in the cabinet of Prime Minister Joop den Uyl. He served in this position until 1977. He was elected to the House of Representatives that same year and in 1978, became parliamentary leader of the Christian Democratic Appeal party in the House. He became prime minister four years later, after the unexpected retirement of Prime Minister Dries van Agt. He would serve as prime minister until 1994 when he decided to step down as party leader and retire from national politics. During his premiership, he was responsible for rebuilding the Dutch economy after the recessions of the 1980s, stimulating sustainable development, reforming social security, and reducing the deficit. He went on to serve as a visiting professor at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and the Tilburg University from 1995 to 2001. In 2001, he was appointed the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and served in this post until 2005. After leaving this post, he continued to serve on the boards of several international non-governmental organizations.
