Phillip Eugene Byrd was born on December 9, 1942, in Cassopolis, Michigan to Leo and Marion Byrd. He graduated from Cassopolis High School and attended Ball State University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education. He obtained his Master’s Degree from Indiana University.

On December 10, 1976, Phil and Rosamond Winmon (Roz) were united in Holy Matrimony; they were married for over 41 years.

Phil was employed as a teacher in the South Bend Community School Corporation prior to beginning his banking career at St. Joseph Bank and Trust Company; retiring from KeyBank after 35 years of service. After retiring, he did not fall easily into a life of leisure; he worked at the South Bend Heritage Foundation and recently the University of Notre Dame.

Phil was an active and dedicated member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., for over 50 years, and the 100 Black Men of Greater South Bend, Inc. In addition, he was one of the founding members of the African American Community Fund established by the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County.

Phil was kind, generous, and passionate about his family; he was a loving, supporting, and proud father, grandfather and uncle. He earned his pilot license, was interested in photography, and was a former member of the South Bend Par Putters Golf Club. He enjoyed reading, relaxing at Diamond Lake, watching sports, going the shooting range, and most of all spending time with his family and friends.

Phil departed this earthly life unexpectedly on Sunday, February 11, 2018, at the age of 76. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Marion Byrd; and a brother, Edwin Byrd.

Phil will be forever remembered by his wife, Roz Byrd; his son, Darran Teamor; daughter-in-law, Yolanda Teamor; his two grandchildren, Ashley and Cameron Teamor; three brothers, Anthony (Kathy), Leo Kevin (Rosecedar) and Robert Byrd; and his numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.

Visitation will be from 4 - 6 p.m. Thursday, February 15, 2018 at Alford's Mortuary at 1222 Napier St, South Bend, IN. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 16, 2018 at Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church at 1620 S. St. Joseph St, South Bend, IN.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the African American Community Fund c/o the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County at 205 W Jefferson Blvd # 610, South Bend, IN 46601.
