Actress. She was known for her numerous theatrical stage performances which earned her several Tony Award nominations during a career that span four decades. Born Janice Elaine Maxwell, she attended Minnesota State University, Morehead, but left college before graduation to move to New York. She first worked as a script reader and was a member of the Paper Bag Players, a New York theater company for children. In 1989, she made her Broadway debut in the musical "City of Angels". She would go on to perform in such Broadway plays as "Dancing at Lughnasa", "A Doll's House", "The Sound of Music", "The Dinner Party", "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", "Coram Boy", "Lend Me a Tenor", "The Royal Family", and "Follies". She would earn five Tony Award nominations for her work during her career. She also performed in many off-Broadway productions throughout her career. Besides the theatrical stage, she also worked in television with such credits as "Law and Order", "One Life to Live", "The Divide", "The Good Wife", "BrainDead" and "Madam Secretary". She retired from the stage in 2011, but continued working in mostly television up until her passing. She passed away after a long battle with cancer.
