James D. McCorkle, age 87, of Gatesville, passed away Monday, February 12, 2018.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018 at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Bruce Cox officiating. Burial will follow at Restland Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services.

James was born on July 19, 1930 in Coryell County, Texas to the late Ernest and Erna Wolfe McCorkle. He grew up in Gatesville and graduated from Gatesville High School in 1949. James married Ruth Love in 1954. He served in the US Army for two years, and later in the US Army Reserve. He then went to work for his father at the family business, Allis-Chalmers Dealership until becoming a civil service employee for the fire department on Fort Hood for 25 years, retiring as Fire Chief in 1983. He and his wife moved to Lake Buchannan in 1979 to enjoy life after his retirement where he was a fishing guide for many years. They moved back to Gatesville in 2011. He was a member of Mound Cowboy Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth McCorkle, in 2017; sisters, Wilda Hammer, Dorothy McCorkle; and brother, Bill McCorkle.

James is survived by his daughter, Peggy Davidson and husband, Doug; son, David McCorkle and wife, Lottie; sister, Anita Zirkelbach; grandchildren, Darius Stewart, James Lee McCorkle, Clay McCorkle, and Dan Davidson; and great-grandchildren, Morgan, Madison, Alanna, Jaymee, Heather, and James Allen.
