Son of Matthew Rice and Ann McGeehee Rice (1720-1748). His father is first found in 1741, mentioned in a deed executed in Amelia County, (present day Prince Edward County, VA and said to be in the area of the Sandy River). This record declares Matthew to be "of Hanover County." (Amelia County Deed Book Vol 2, p 137)

In 1752 Rice married Lavinia Crenshaw. His Last Will was made in 1816, leaving his estate, both real and personal to his wife and mentioning the following children: Gabriel Rice, Lucy Rice Black, Jesse Rice, Nathan Rice, Letitia Rice Craig, Nancy Talbert. He mentioned Letitia and Nancy by name as his daughters. He then made a bequest to Elizabeth Black, wife of Henry Willis Black; Sarah Willis; and Anna Dudley, wife of Robert Dudley.
