On Saturday, February 10, 2018, Phyllis Tucker, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, surrounded by her family, passed away at age 91 at home in Nampa.
Phyllis was born at home in Vallejo, California. Her parents were James Mitchell and Lenora Blanche Strong. Her father passed away in 1943 and the family, (mother and five siblings: Betty, Edward, Robert, Richard and Donald), moved to San Francisco for employment. Phyllis was in the 9th grade when she and two older siblings had to work to help family needs.
She worked at Foster’s Lunch System in San Francisco as a cashier. Later she worked at the Hunter’s Point Naval Shipyard Cafeteria in San Francisco until the shipyard closed in 1971.
She met a sailor from Nebraska, stationed at the shipyard, Elmer Kenneth Kahle, at a dance club. They were married in August 1945. She was 18 and Elmer was 24. For about three years, Elmer and Phyllis traveled throughout the western United States for an advertising agency, (highway billboard signs). To this union were born two children, David Louis Kahle 1948 and Karen Lee Kahle 1954.
Phyllis and Elmer were later divorced in 1954 and she went to work at the shipyard. During the years working, Phyllis’ mother, Lenora helped with the two children until grandma’s passing in 1962. By then we were old enough to get ourselves off to school. Mom was home for us after school.
While working at the yard, she met a shipyard worker, Chester James “Jim” Tucker. They were married August 1975, (Phyllis was 48 and Jim was 51), and remained married until “Grandpa Jim’s” passing in August 1991.
Phyllis and Jim lived in San Bruno, Watsonville, and Santa Rosa, California. They moved to Nampa, Idaho in 1982. She was an active, faithful member of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod and attended Zion Lutheran Church. (While still living in San Francisco, she attended St. John Lutheran Church.) She had many wonderful friends whom she loved. She loves God and Jesus Christ and has read the Bible every day for the past 25 years.
She loved traveling by car and by airplane. Since 1991 she visited most but not all the lower forty-eight states. She went to Canada two different times, Vancouver, B.C. and Niagara Falls. Her most recent trips were to Austin, Texas by airplane, (granddaughter high-school graduation) 2015, and Salt Lake City, Utah, by car, (grandson wedding) 2017.
She loved making dolls and buying them. She has a large collection which gave her much joy. In addition to the Bible, she read many books of different topics and titles. She collected jewelry, shoes, and purses. She was loved by all who knew her and will be deeply missed.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jim; daughter, Karen; siblings: Betty Krahne and Edward Mitchell; and nephew, James Sedivy.
She is survived by her son, David (Linda) Kahle, of Nampa; seven grandchildren: Stacey (Jim) Thomas, Kevin (Tami) Kahle, Jeremy (Shelley) Kahle, Kerry (Aaron) Bailey, Tina Moss, Shauna (Ed) Hoxsie and Mason Mize; brothers: Robert and Richard Mitchell, both of CA, and Donald Mitchell, of NJ; sister-in-law, Barbara Mitchell, of LA; son-in law, Richard Mize, of CA; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
