Andrew James Lawson, age 27, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer, February 8, 2018.

Loving son of James D. and Regina L. (O’Brien) Lawson of Norwell, brother of Sarah Hanson and her husband Cliff of Dorchester, and Bridget Lawson of Norwell. Grandson of Donald and Margaret Lawson of Lexington. He is also lovingly remembered by his many aunts, uncles, cousins, coaches and friends.

Andrew attended Norwell Public Schools and graduated with a certificate of completion in June 2008. He played on the soccer, basketball and track teams while in high school where he was supported and embraced by the AD, coaches and his teammates. After high school Andrew returned as an assistant coach for the soccer and basketball teams and was known to give many inspirational speeches.

Andrew participated in Special Olympics including swimming, skiing, tennis, softball, basketball and sailing. He loved the competition and proudly earned many medals and trophies.

Andrew also took part in the Polar Plunge fundraiser for many years. It was a true honor when Andrew and his family were inducted into the Special Olympics MA Hall of Fame in May 2017.

Andrew also enjoyed being a very active member of Friendship Home in Norwell and was part of the Bridges to Work Program. It was through this program that he acquired a job at Not Your Average Joe’s and loved working there for many years. He also participated in the social recreation activities which included, Guy’s Night, going to sporting events, plays and dinner. The Saturday night theme parties were something he always looked forward to.

Andrew was an active member of the Emilson YMCA in Hanover. He frequently practiced with his tennis team, the Lobstars, and enjoyed travelling with his team to tournaments in Denver, North Carolina, Atlanta and Hilton Head, SC. He was also a member of the Hoopstar basketball team.

Andrew was also an avid Boston Sports fan and closely followed the Boston Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots. He enjoyed attending games and also studied the lineups and was quick to suggest trades to strengthen the team. Many times we would see that he had written his name as DH in the lineup of the Red Sox.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate Andrew’s life on Wednesday, February 14 from 4-8pm at Sullivan Funeral Home, Hanover. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, February 15 at 10am at St. Mary’s Church, Hanover. Internment at Great Neck Woods Cemetery, Mashpee.

In lieu of flowers, donations to honor Andrew may be made to: Cousin Lizzy’s Special Olympics/Boston Marathon Fund (www.crowdrise.com/elizabethdowns3); or South Shore YMCA/Lobstars, South Shore YMCA, 91 Longwater Circle, Suite 100, Norwell MA 02061; or Friendship Home, PO Box 916, Norwell, MA 02061.
