John, a Christian and WWII Veteran born in Memphis, TN to James B. and GertieMarie Mitchum on March 2, 1921. He died peacefully surrounded by family at Hospice of Northwest Ohio on Tuesday, February 6, 2018. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Brenda; children Beverly Stewart, Barbara Greely, Diane Mitchum, Y. Olivia Greely, Sylvia (Herbert) Scurles of Toledo; Ernestine Powell, Sherry Kidd, of Detroit, MI, Renee (Charles) Moore of Columbus, OH; a sister-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, 6 brothers, 1 sister, and son, Derek Hodges.

He served in the Army serving from 1944–1946 in Hawaii, Okinawa, Saipan, and Guam. After an honorable discharge he retired from Doehler Jarvis after 39 years. He then worked as a Chauffeur for 15 years. He was a member of Walk the Word Ministry, Rev. Timothy Pettaway, Pastor. Previously, he was a member of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church serving as a Deacon and in various leadership capacities for over 50 years.

The Memorial Service is Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 1430 W. Bancroft St. Family hour 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. followed by the service with Rev. Timothy Pettaway officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Scholarship Fund of Walk The Word Ministry (2602 Nebraska Ave. Toledo, OH 43607) or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
