Major McElroy was a C-130B Hercules navigator assigned to the 774th Tactical Airlift Squadron, 463rd Tactical Airlift Wing, U.S. Air Force during Operation Rolling Thunder (Vietnam). His remains were recovered 9 June 1993 and identified 14 May 2008 (Arlington National Cemetery). His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. He is honored on the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Washington DC; VVM Wall, Panel 59e, Line 9.
