DOUGLAS JAMES SIMS, affectionately known by his family as “Junior”, entered into eternal rest suddenly on Saturday, March 25, 2017, in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico while celebrating his 35th wedding anniversary with his high school sweetheart and the love of his life Vanessa Sims.

Life: Douglas was born May 4, 1962, to Douglas and Virginia Mae Sims in Oahu, Hawaii, the youngest of six children and their only son.
He was raised in Youngstown, OH.
Douglas served his country in the U. S. Navy; and was most recently employed at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA.
He was a member of New Beech Grove Baptist Church (NBG) serving as a trustee and usher; a member of The Brotherhood, the NBG bowling league; and Sunday School.
Douglas graduated from The Rayen School in Youngstown, in 1980 joining the U. S. Navy in 1981.
He loved traveling, cooking, riding roller coasters, sports and playing games with family. Douglas was a kind man with a great smile, always willing to help whenever needed; his footprints made deep impressions in countless lives and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Family: Douglas leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife, Vanessa Grace Humphrey Sims,
two daughters LaKeisha S. Sims and Tamika S. (Justice) Telfare, his precious grandchildren, Zaire M. Black, Justin F., Grace E., Peyton M. and Victor J. Telfare all of Newport News; his mother Virginia Mae Sims of Youngstown, OH, four sisters, Joann (Carrington) Robinson of Boardman, OH, Jeanette Cook of Chesapeake, VA, Tanya Mims of Youngstown, OH, and Tammie (James) Burgan of Yuma, AZ. Father-in-law Jesse (Bobbie) Humphrey of Cortland, OH, mother-in-law Betty Humphrey of Richlands, NC, sister-in-law Victoria (Carlos) Rush of Warren, OH, and brother-in-law Reginald (Kathryn) Humphrey of Northridge, CA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends.
Douglas was preceded in death by his son Jarin Douglas Sims, father Douglas Sims and sister Brenda Joy Sims.

Viewing will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Nickelson-Cummings Funeral Home, 4304 Victoria Blvd., Hampton, VA. The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. A celebration of life will be held at noon Friday, April 7, 2017, at New Beech Grove Baptist Church, 326 Tabbs Lane, Newport News, VA.
Interment at Peninsula Memorial Park.
Donations can be made to the American Heart Association in the memory of Douglas James Sims.
