A native of Baton Rouge, a 1941 graduate of Baton Rouge High, a graduate of LSU and long time first grade teacher at Glasgow, Magnolia Woods, and Riveroaks Elementary Schools, died February 6, 2018 at Amber Terrace Assisted Living. She was 92 years old.

She was a member of the “Famous Forty One,” the first group of women allowed in the LSU Tiger Marching Band during World War II in the fall of 1943. She was an avid gardener and genealogy enthusiast.

Visitation will be Thursday, February 15th in Pope Hall at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at 10 a.m. followed by religious services at 11 a.m. conducted by the Rev. Bryan Owen, Rector. Interment in Roselawn Memorial Park.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law: William E. and Doris Newman of Westminster, Colorado, John R. and Julie Newman, and Thomas R. and Susan Newman of Baton Rouge. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Keith Carlton of Orlando, Florida, Kathryn Shick and husband Matt of Valrico, Florida, Blake Newman and wife Laura of Malvern, Pennsylvania, Christopher Newman of Houston, Texas, Stuart Newman and wife Stephanie of Baton Rouge, and Gordon Newman and wife Theresa of Conroe, Texas. She is also survived by 10 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband C. E. “Ed” Newman, daughter Donna L. Carlton of Maitland Florida, parents; John D. and Angel Nuber McGregor, sister Margaret Wilkinson, and brother John D. McGregor.
