President of Bolivia. The son of a previous President (Jose Ballivian) he had a varied career as a soldier, orator, composer and writer. While out of the country he was called back on the assassination of the previous President and was elected to general acclaim. He only had nine months in the position in 1873/74 before he died of stomach cancer, but while there he adhered to democratic principles and the rule of law, which was a refreshing change.
