Son of Fanny Larned and Asa Hutchins. James S. Hutchins married Maria J. Morrill on April 16, 1838 in Wrentham, Massachusetts. He was listed as a cabinetmaker in the 1850 federal census, Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, and in 1860 in Griggsville, Pike County, Illinois.

"JULIA MARIA [daughter of Isaac Morrill], b. Jan. 4, 1815, Thompson, Conn., d. Dec., 1891, Kensington, Conn., buried in Grove Street Cemetery, m. James Spalding Hutchins. He migrated to Griggsville, Ill., from Springfield, Mass., then came back to Cleveland, where he was a cabinet-maker, was a deacon in Plymouth Church, and in 1860 was drowned. They had 6 children but only 3 lived to maturity.
