ATHENS - David Wesley Baird, 79, of Athens, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018, at The Laurels of Athens.
Born Oct. 23, 1938 in Columbus, he was the son of the late Clyde and Dorothy Neer Baird.
A graduate of Green Hills High School in Cincinnati, he attended Capital University and received his bachelor's degree from The Ohio State University. He also completed graduate studies at Ohio State. He was a professional artist and craftsman and was the Founding Director of the Foothills School of American Craft at Amesville and Nelsonville. He and his wife operated Mud City Brasswork for over 50 years. He was a mentor and friend to many craft people.
David is survived by his wife, Roberta Hird Baird; three daughters, Renee (Rex) Hughes, Michelle Delong and Yvette (Gary) Crawford; a son, Shawn (Sumir) Baird; four grandchildren, Elise Crawford, Shalin, Sonny and Seema Baird.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Baird and Robert Baird.
A private family service will be held at Canaanville Cemetery. A public memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens.
