The funeral for James Porter Hemingway will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hayfield with the Rev. Stephan Sandness officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Hayfield with military honors by the Hayfield American Legion Rothie Post #330
Mr. Hemingway, 75 , of Hayfield, former chief of police of Hayfield and deputy sheriff in Dodge County, died Saturday (March 31,2001) at Field Crest Care Center in Hayfield.
James Porter Hemingway was born April 20,1925,the son of Porter E. and Luella (Peterson) Hemingway in Mower County. He attended Hayfield schools and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the India-Burma Theater. He married Phyllis Lee on Dec. 8, 1946, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hayfield.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Porter J.(Shirley) of New Ulm and James of Nixa, MO; four grandchildren; a great grandchild; a brother, Richard (Shirley) of Taopi; a sister, Betty Weeks of Bloomington.
Friends may call from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church.
Czaplewski Familiy Funeral Home in Hayfield is in charge of the arrangements.
Note from Shirley Hemingway: After Jim's funeral,law enforcement people formed a long line outside of the church, saluting the casket as it was carried out. The highway to the cemetery was blocked off by numerous law enforcement vehicles, with an officer standing at attention saluting the funeral procession. Jim's law enforcement career was an important part of his life and he would have been so honored by this very moving tribute given by his law enforcement "family".
