Walter Clopton of Boxted, Essex, Gentleman (1585– 1622/1630?), married on 21 April 1612 at Boxted, Margaret, daughter of Robert Maidstone (sometimes Maydston or Mateson) of Great Horkesley, Essex, Gentleman. One source says that this Walter Clopton came to New England with his kinsman John Winthrop in 1630, but soon returned home. If so, he died shortly thereafter, for his widow, Margaret, married Robert Crane about 1631. If he died in 1622, as some believe, Margaret stayed unmarried for an unreasonably long time after his death, for it was common at the time for a widow, having no means of support or protection, to remarry within a year after her husband's death. Though there was another Walter Clopton living in 1630, our Walter not only lived on the adjoining manor to the Winthrops but was John Winthrop's brother-in-law. The two had known each other since childhood.
