Listed in NC Troops "NC Company "D" 39th Regiment as Private on 22 Nov 1863. He took part in the "Battle of Atlanta" and his brother, William died in his arms. He carried the body of his brother from Atlanta by mule and wagon to their home in Buncombe County, NC for burial. During the trip he would build fires at night to keep away wild animals.
Had two children with his first wife, Margaret. He divorced Margaret Jones in Bartow County, Georgia on Aug 1, 1876.
He sold his property in Buncombe county to the Biltmore estate in 1890 and moved to Clay County NC in 1892 and bought property in the Oak Forest Community. He first built a Log Cabin for the family to use prior to building a two story five room house. He worked as a carpenter and building homes and furniture. He donated property and built the first Oak Forest Church Cemetery.. He is buried in the Oak Forest Cemetery in Clay County, NC.
