Actor, U.S. Ambassador to Mexico. He was best known for his roles in such classic films as "Imitation of Life," "Spartacus," and "Psycho." He was born Juan Vincent Apablaza, but had his name changed to John Anthony Golenor after his stepfather adopted him. He attended Stanford University where he earned a bachelor's degree in Latin American economic history. After graduation, he joined the United States Navy and during the Korean War, served as an air intelligence officer aboard the USS Princeton. After the war, he served as a Pan-American affairs officer until 1955. After leaving the Navy, he wanted to go into foreign service, but a friend convinced him to go into acting. He made his acting debut in the 1956 western film "Raw Edge." He would gain a reputation among film viewers as a "heartthrob." Besides "Imitation of Life," "Spartacus," and "Psycho," his career acting credits would include "A Time to Love and A Time to Die" (1958), "Midnight Lace" (1960), "Back Street" (1961), and "Thoroughly Modern Millie" (1967). He also appeared in numerous television series during his career such as "Destry," "Convoy," "The Doris Day Show," "Mannix," "Medical Center," and "Fantasy Island." He left the acting profession in 1981. During his acting career, he served as a special advisor to the secretary general of the Organization of American States from 1961 to 1974. He also served as president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1971 to 1973. In 1981, he was appointed the United States Ambassador to Mexico by President Ronald Reagan and served in this position until 1986. After leaving the ambassadorship, he served in various positions in the business world and also served on the boards of several organizations.
