Gerald Robert Herbst of Comfort was called home to be with his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, February 07, 2018 at the age of 89 at his home.

Gerald was born August 2, 1928 in Comfort to Robert and Clara Herbst.

From the family farm at Flat Rock, Gerald attended school at Comfort and graduated from Comfort High School. During the post-World War II years, Gerald joined the United States Air Force at the age of 17 and served his country for three years. He spent his tour of duty on the island of Iwo Jima and the Japanese island of Honshu at Itami Airbase in Osaka. Following his honorable discharge from the United States Air Force, Gerald worked in Fort Worth and then moved to Fredericksburg where he worked at Stein Lumber Company. He married Dorothy Fritz in 1955 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Harper, Texas. After his marriage to Dorothy, they returned to Comfort to make their home on the Herbst homestead where they continued the family dairy business for several years. Gerald also worked at Schwethelm’s Hardware Store and Mooney’s Aircraft as a draftsman before taking a position with Hill Country Telephone Company where he worked as a central office installer/repairman until he retired.

Gerald was very active in his community. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he served on the parish council, was a lay reader, and sang in the church choir. He volunteered on the Chamber of Commerce float committee, the Comfort Library Board, Meals on Wheels, Comfort Athletic Boosters, and was a Comfort ISD Board of Trustee.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Dorothy, to whom he was married for 62 years. He is also survived by his four children and their spouses; Robert and Barbara Herbst of San Antonio; David and LeEllen Herbst of San Antonio; Helen and Ralph Real of Kerrville; Brian and Maria Herbst of Easley, South Carolina; as well as 17 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ann Herbst and brother-in-law, Tino Orta.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Clara Herbst; brother and his wife, Albert and Mary Herbst; brother, Walter Herbst; sister-in-law, Frances Herbst; sister, Roberta Orta, and brother-in-law, Werner Eberle.

The body will lie in state in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church from 9-10 on Monday February 12th with a Mass of Resurrection at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Martin Garcia Avila officiating.

Graveside services and interment will follow in the Comfort Cemetery.

Memorials can be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Building Fund, Meals on Wheels, and the Lutheran Church Comfort Table.

Visitation for Gerald Herbst will be held on Sunday February 11th from 3:30-6:30 in Sacred Heart Catholic, Comfort

Rosary services will be held on Sunday February 11th at 5:00 p.m. in Sacred Heart Church, Comfort
