According to his death certificate, James was born in Louisiana to James A. and Elizabeth Bean (nee Terrell) on December 24, 1862. The Censuses of 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 also indicate a birth year of 1862. His headstone and the Census of 1870 indicate his birth in 1861. His father died during the Civil War, and his mother later married Bartley Enos Gilcrease. They are buried near James in Garden of Memories. James married Josephine Turner about 1892. They moved to Texas around 1896. They are living in Comanche Co, TX in the 1900 Census. James and Josephine split up between 1900 and 1910. James and the children reside in the Sowers district of what is now Irving, TX in the 1910 Census. By 1917, James and daughter Willie moved to Anderson County, TX. The 3 older children remained in Dallas County. At the time of the 1920 Census, James was living with Willie's family. He married Edna Rea about 1924. They remained in the Elkhart area until his death.
