Lane was born in Fitzgerald, Georgia, but raised in Abbeville, Georgia. He was the son of Lewis Lam Gibbs (1912 - 1972) and Stella Wynelle Stonecypher Gibbs (1914 - 1961).
Paternal Grandparents: William A. Gibbs ( 1873-1962) and Elizabeth C. Gibbs Gibbs (1878-1956).
Maternal Grandparents: Charlie Edgar Stonecypher (1887-1967) and Lillie Belle Buice Stonecypher (1890-1958).

After graduation from Georgia Southern with a degree in art he taught in the Savannah, Georgia school district for 5 years.

Then he moved to Birmingham, Alabama and worked in the sprinkler design business until he retired. He loved to paint and collected fine art. Along with his interest in art, he took joy in antique collecting. Lane and his partner enjoyed traveling and had been to many parts of the world. The Miss Alabama pageant was of great interest to him where he served as a judge for many years.

Lane is survived by his partner, Fred Blevins, who has cherished many precious memories over 37 years; his brother, Larry Gibbs (Faye); and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held in Lane's honor on Monday, February 12, 2018, at 10 AM at Holy Apostle Episcopal Church in Hoover. Interment will be Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at 3 PM at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Rochelle, Georgia.
