He met Kay Annette Cunningham while attending college and they were married on October 23, 1965, at Rapid City. Archie enlisted in the Air Force in 1966, and was stationed at Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, AZ. After his military service they returned to South Dakota and resided at various locations including Aberdeen, Westport, Martin, and at his final residence in rural Frederick. They remained married until Kay's passing in the fall of 2011.
His early working career included various positions with a construction crew, the Beanbag Grocery Store, Goodyear, and JCPenney. However, Archie's primary career was as an employee of the Federal Government. He worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and ultimately retired from the Indian Health Service.
Archie enjoyed the company of his family and friends. Many of his favorite stories were of his siblings and parents during his early years, and later of leisure times spent with his own family and friends. Archie participated in many sports during his early years and had a 90-mph fastball. During his adult years he enjoyed hobby farming, raising chickens and other livestock, gardening, camping, hunting, team roping, following the activities of his children and grandchildren, and watching the Green Bay Packers. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Aberdeen.
Grateful for having shared Archie’s life are his three children: Rick Clifford, Tammy (Bill) Dennert, and Archie Clifford, Jr.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Preceding Archie in death are his wife, Kay Clifford; and his parents, Calvin Clifford, Sr., and Jeanette Clifford.
