Also referred to as “Carl” and Carlos” in writings.

Son of Johan Anshelm and Ulrika Nylén. With his family, he moved from Boone County, Iowa then to Crawford County, Iowa and then to Clay County, South Dakota.

He clerked and later became a pharmacist in South Dakota and Colorado. He was also elected Justice of the Peace in Globeville, Colorado (a suburb of Denver).

Charles married the divorcé, Mrs. Clara B. McCormack, on 11 Dec 1887 in Denver, Colorado and on 25 Mar 1891 (after their divorce on 21 Nov 1890). Charles’ step-daughter (Clara’s daughter), Madelon Eve Patricia McCormack, then became his ward after Clara’s death in 1893.
Deemed “incorrigible” by the Denver court system (stigmatized, no less), she was ordered to be placed in the Industrial School for Girls in April 1897.

Charles delved full-time into his pharmacy work as a druggist for Royal Chemical Co. out of Denver.

He married Nettie Idella Kennedy on 17 Jul 1894 in Kendall, Illinois.

Having moved to Illinois around 1904 to start work in Eola for the Green Medical Company, he was once again embroiled in marital drama. In March 1904, he shot and killed George W. Pearce, Jr. after determining his wife’s affections for him. Later, pleading “self-defense,” he was acquitted by a jury. A divorce was granted in 1906 in Kendall County, Illinois. Nettie later married a Mr. Johnson.

Charles moved to Glenwood, S.D. where his extended family settled, living with his sister, Hannah, and her husband, August Holmes.
