Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at Nazareth House Chapel, 5555 Manning Ave. Los Angeles.
Burial will be at Columbarium of St. Mary of the Mount, Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas.
Rosary will be at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 24 The Nazareth House, Los Angeles.
Ruth was born to Frank and Anna (Heller) Baumhover on Feb. 20, 1916, on a farm near Mount Carmel, Iowa. She attended a one-room country school house near Mount Carmel and then graduated from Carroll High School in 1932. She had skipped two years of school and graduated at age 16. She took typing and shorthand courses and prepared herself for office work.
She married Samuel James Spear on May 15, 1943, in San Francisco, California. She worked as a receptionist in a chiropractor’s office in Carroll until 1943, when she took the train to San Francisco to marry Jim Spear of Churdan. She was in Civil Service during World War II, three years, in San Francisco and Fort Worth, Texas. She and her husband ran their family business, Churdan (Iowa) Locker Service, for 20 plus years.
She had lived in Carroll; San Francisco, Fort Worth, Churdan, Horseshoe Bend and Los Angeles.
Ruth was a tireless volunteer for community, in particular during her years in Churdan. She was very active in church groups such as Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters of the Americas, often serving in leadership roles.
Ruth was a very good bridge player and a highly sought after bridge partner.
Ruth is survived by her son, Jim Spear (Gladys); daughters, Janet Baker and Jean Aldriedge (Richard); two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Leo Baumhover and Frank Baumhover; sister, Rose Bauer; and sister-in-law, Julie Baumhover.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Spear; brothers, Clarence, Arthur, David and Herbert Baumhover; and sisters, Cordelia Morris and Rita Trotter.
