Herman served as a Sergeant & Gunner on a B-25C #41-12485, Headquarter's Squadron, 5th Air Force, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Saginaw County, Michigan prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on December 13, 1941 in Detroit, Michigan. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Checker and also as Single, without dependents.
B-25C #41-12485 took off from 7 Mile Drome (Jackson Airport), Central Province, Papua New Guinea on a Recon. Mission over Buna, Oro Province, Papua New Guinea. They never returned to base.
When their remains were recovered it was determined that one of the engine's of B-25C #41-12485 had been hit by gunfire which probably caused them to crash.
Herman was first declared "Missing In Action" and once his remains were recovered his status was changed to "Killed In Action"
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
