John T. Chance, 78, passed away Thursday, February 1, 2018 after complications from heart bypass surgery.

He was born on July 2, 1939 to Maynard and Della Chance in Des Moines. John spent his childhood in New Providence, IA where he graduated from High School in 1958. He received his B.A. degree in Marketing from State College of Iowa (UNI) in 1962. John and his brother, Ed worked as commercial painters to pay their way through college.

John met his wife, Jessica while at UNI and they were married in June of 1963.

John began his career in the petroleum industry as a territory sales manager for Sun Oil Company. He held many positions with the company in Iowa, South Dakota and Oklahoma before deciding to start a new business. In the fall of 1978 he and his partner, Dick Rice founded Diamond Oil Company in Des Moines. He continued to spend time in the business with his sons, Jason and Matt and all the employees that loved their "chats" with John.

John was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. His communication style and engaging smile were a comfort to all.

John spent many years supporting his boys in the Boy Scouts of America. He hiked the Silver Arrow Trail in the Black Hills of South Dakota and rode horseback on a Cavalcade at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. He enjoyed trips to the Outer Banks of North Carolina with his family and loved watching all of his grandchildren's activities.

John was an avid collector of antique advertising and petroleum memorabilia. In 1986, he and a partner founded Iowa Gas; an annual swap meet held in Des Moines each year. John was very particular about what he collected and had an eye for quality. Through the years he collected some of the finest porcelain advertising signs, tobacco tins, gas pump globes, Diamond Dye Cabinets and various other items. His most recent conquest was to decorate the corporate office of Diamond Oil with these items.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jessica; three sons, Matthew (Cara), Jason (Annette), Gregory (Lisa); six grandchildren, Ryan, Ashtyn, Nicholas, Zachary, Emerson, and Liam; brother, Ed (Emma) Chance of Council Bluffs; sister, Judith Kilzer of Eldridge; brother-in-law, Matthew Moon (Diane) of Long Island; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law, Darrell Kilzer.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at McLaren's Chapel in West Des Moines. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 7, 2108 at Windsor Heights Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Windsor Heights Lutheran Church.
