CARTERVILLE -- Gilbert "Gib" Hess, 88, of Carterville, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, in Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County.
Services will held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, in the Fountain of Life Tabernacle Church in Crainville, with the Revs. Bob Wynn and Ralph Brandon officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Carterville. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at Riggin-Pillatsch Funeral Home in Carterville.
Gilbert was born on March 14, 1916, in Grassy Township, to Hiram Gorton and Effie (Thomas) Hess.
He married Clara Clendenin in 1940 in Charleston, Mo., and she preceded him in death in 1944. He then married Janis Ross on May 12, 1945, in Herrin, and she preceded him in death in 1995.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Darla and David Smith of Carterville; three sons and daughters-in-law, James and Jacqueline Hess of Cambria, Randy and Angie Hess of Carterville, and David and Cindy Hess of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; nine grandchildren, Jessica Budd of Glen Carbon, Bruce Grissom of Southern Illinois, Joshawa Hess of Zeigler, Treva Hess of Cambria, Ashley and Ferrol Hess, both of Carterville, Mason and Abigail Hess, both of Cape Girardeau, and Eric Keibler of North Carolina; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his two wives, Clara and Janis; two daughters, Wanda Sue Hess and Jolene Grissom; six brothers; and five sisters.
Gilbert worked for Cox's Saw Mill for more than 20 years and at Tuck Tape in Carbondale for more than 10 years, later retiring as a laborer from the forestry service.
He was the last surviving charter member of the Pentecostal Faith Assembly in Crainville, now known as the Fountain of Life Tabernacle.
He was a volunteer at the Carterville and Herrin Senior Citizens.
He was an avid Cardinals fan and enjoyed playing dominos.
