Lewis Wallace "Lew" Key was born on February 8, 1860 in Graves County, Kentucky, the son of John Baker Key (1826–1904) and his 1st wife Pharabah Isabell "Jane" (Adams) Key (1833–1876).

He was married to May Anna Carney (1860-1954), the daughter of Absolom Carney and Martha Jan (Conway) Carney.

A lumber dealer at a saw mill and living on South 9th Street in Mayfield, Kentucky, he was 73 years old and married when he died of angina pectoris at home on September 21, 1933. Burial was the next day in Maplewood Cemetery.
