Lt. Col. Douglas D Wyatt, USMC Retired

[4 June 1947- 25 January 2018]

Douglas D Wyatt passed away on 25 January 2018. He was born to Leora Dattage and Blaine B. Wyatt on 4 June 1947 in Ogden, UT. He spent his childhood and attended school in Sunnyside, WA after the family and his 4 siblings relocated to farm in the area. Douglas attended Brigham Young University and graduated cum laude in 1969 with a Bachelor’s degree in Geology.

Upon graduation he joined the United States Marine Corps to serve his country. Over a 25 year career span in the Marine Corps, Douglas is a designated Air Combat Tactics Instructor and completed Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) and the Marine Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) course. He also flew the Phantom F4 with the VMFA-235 ‘Death Angels’ Squadron and obtained advanced degrees from the Naval War College. Some of his numerous postings included Hawaii, Camp Pendleton, Okinawa, the Naval Academy and MCAS Yuma. Douglas retired in 1994 from the Marine Corps as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Douglas met the love of his life; Deborah in Yuma, they married on 25 July 1988 in Boulder, CO and shared over 30 years together. After retiring from the USMC, he spent the next 15 years of civilian life as an expatriate in the United Arab Emirates with his family and career as the Director of Safety with SkyWest Airlines, before retiring in 2009. An avid hunter, fisherman, and naturalist Douglas instilled a love of nature and conservation in his children and family. He continued to travel with his family on vacations to Egypt, Kenya, Cyprus, and on airline audits to China, Mongolia, Australia and Russia. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elks Lodge.

He is preceded in death by his parents; Leora Dattage and Blaine B. Wyatt, and his mother in law; Marjorie Sneed Smith Otto.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah L., father of Catherine Mallory of Salt Lake City, UT, Carter D. of St. George, UT, and Barrett D. (Addison) of Saint George, UT. Survivors also include son R. Pattrick (Deneille) of Hurricane, UT; as well as, seven grandchildren, his siblings and their families.

In lieu of flowers and memorials, donations may be made to Operation Homefront or Our Military Kids.

A celebration of his life will be held on 17 February 2018 at 1 pm at the Spilsbury Mortuary in St. George, UT for close friends and family members.
