The daughter of Thomas and Joanna (Demoranville) Spooner.

Emily was 18 when she married Andrew Alden Cole, a Middleboro, MA farmer and the son of Alden and Ruth (Manchester) at New Bedford, MA on April 25, 1847. They were parents to Emily W., born March 1, 1848; Andrew A., born June 28, 1850; Mary Elizabeth, born Oct. 22, 1852; Abby J. born Sept. 19, 1855; Uriah Sanford, born Nov. 8, 1858; and James Otis, born Feb. 2, 1863.

Her husband Andrew enlisted for military service on August 18, 1862 as a Private in Co. D of the 18th Massachusetts Infantry. Wounded in the left wrist at the battle of Fredericksburg on Dec. 13, 1862, he died of the effects of having his arm amputated above the elbow and chronic diarrhea at Hammond Army Hospital, Point Lookout, MD, on Feb. 1, 1863. His remains were eventually interred at Arlington National Cemetery, Section K, Grave 12774.

Emily applied for a Widow's pension on Sept. 9, 1863 and was granted benefits of $8.00 per month and an additional $2.00 per month for each minor child under the age of 16. Emily, who never remarried, died at age 56 of Brights Disease and was interred at the Peckham Cemetery beside her parents.
