Pair Found Dead in Car Succumb to Gas Fumes

Police Declare Car Became Stuck Due to Conditions

A teenage Norfolk girl and Lakeville man accidently died of carbon monoxide poisoning Saturday night when their car backed up on icy Robertsville Road and became stuck on the snowbank.
They had phoned for the English wrecker in Winsted about 11 p.m. Saturday at a nearby house and went back to the card.
The bodies of Miss Leslie Ann Christinat, 17, of Greenwoods Road West, Norfolk and Dennis M. Purdy, 25 of Main Street, Lakeville and New York City, were discovered in the front seat of the 1959 model Chevrolet sedan.
Police said their car was parked with its rear end pushed into a snowbank on the left side of Robertsville Road beside Sandy Brook.
The car was on the hard surface road that is sometimes referred to as Forge Road leading across French's bridge high above Sandy Brook, a tributary of the Farmington River.
The road where the car was parked is a steep incline leading to the Robertsville-Riverton road nearby.
State Police Lieut. Cleveland B. Fuessenich, commander of Canaan Trop B, said the car apparently couldn't make its way up the steep hill because of slippery conditions and apparently struck the snowbank in backing down. He said the rear end was stuck in snow and the tail pipe became obstructed.
Lieut. Fuessenich said the couple phoned for a wrecker from a nearby house and apparently went back to the car to wait. It was during that time that they were overcome by carbon monoxide, Fuessenich said.
He said the wrecker went out but couldn't locate the car that was out of sight from the main road. Highways were slippery, Saturday night and there was heavy fog in the area Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Several passerby saw the car as early as 6 a.m. Sunday but state police were not notified until about 11 a.m. Russell Euglow, who lived nearby discovered the bodies. He in turn called State Police Trooper Ralph Hazen, also a neighbor.
Dr. Heinz W. Markwald, medical examiner, was at the scene and bodies were removed to the Torrant Funeral Home, Norfolk.
Miss Christinat was born in Winsted May 29, 1949, daughter of Irving F. and Alice (Kelly) Christinat. She was a senior student at Northwestern Regional School, Winsted, and had been accepted for nursing at St. Mary's Hospital , Waterbury, and St. Francis Hospital, Hartford school of nursing. She was a member of the school's Future Nurse's Club, active in Taps, and the Pilgrim Fellowship of Church of Christ, Congregational, Norfolk. She had planned to enter St. Francis school in the fall.
Surviving besides her parents are a brother John Christinat, and a sister, Jane Christinat, and several aunts and uncles.
The funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Church of Christ Congregational, Norfolk, with the Rev. Alden C. Hebard, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, Norfolk.
Friends may call at the Torrant Funeral Home, Maple Avenue, Norfolk, today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.

Purdy was born in New York City, December 15, 1941, the son of Robert and Eleanor (McPeck) Purdy, 423 East 81st Street, He was employed as an auto mechanic by the Dutchess Auto Co., Millerton, NY. Up to October, he resided at the Stryker House, Main Street, Lakeville, before moving to Millerton.
He leaves his father, Robert Purdy of New York City and his mother Mrs. Eleanor McPeck Brill of New York city.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9 p.m. from the Walter B. Cook Funeral Home, 1504 Walter Avenue and 85th Street, New York City. Local funeral arrangements are being handled by the Torrant Funeral Home, Maple Avenue, Norfolk.
