Barris Ervin Avery, Age 93, passed away on March 29, 2007 at Memorial City Hospital. He was born in Embry, Mississippi on October 6, 1913 to David H. Avery and Minnie Lee Lankford.

Barris is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 68 years Lera; sisters Lucille and Ruby; daughter-in-law Alice Avery; nephew Richard Avery and grandson Darryl Hart. His survivors include daughter Janis Crawford and husband Robert of Sherman; son R. David Avery and wife Bertie of Sugar Land; grandchildren Robin Treadwell of Houston, Charlene Turek and husband Brian of Sugar Land, Cheryl O'Brien of Sherman, Alan Hart, Jay Craig and wife Shea of Sugar Land, Courtney Maris of Houston; great grandchildren Chelsea O'Brien, Kara O'Brien, Rana Treadwell, Briana Turek and Wiley, Haley and Dustin Maris; great-great grandson Garret Cash Miller and numerous nieces and nephews.

He graduated from Van Alstyne High School in Van Alstyne, TX in 1933. He joined the C.C.C. (Civilian Conservation Corps) and spent most of that time in New Mexico. He married Lera Willoughby and moved to Houston where they raised their two children. He drove a streetcar and a bus for a time. Later he worked for Western and Southern Insurance and was one of their top salesmen. He retired in 1975 and they moved to Sherman, TX. He and Lera were also members of Lindale Baptist Church.
