Rita Jane (Williams) Atkinson, 91, of rural Fowler, passed away at 7:50 PM Thursday, February 1, 2018 at University Place of West Lafayette.

Rita was born September 22, 1926 in Remington to the late Verne and Helen (Hoover) Williams. She was a 1944 graduate of Remington High School. Rita also received an Associate's Degree from Stephens College of Columbia, MO, Bachelor's Degree from Indiana State College, and her Master's from Purdue University.

Rita taught in the Rensselaer Central School System for 22 years before retiring in 1984. Her marriage was to Neal Atkinson in the Remington United Methodist Church; he survives.

She was a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, Patchwork Pals Quilt Club, M.B. Club, United Methodist Women, Dorcas Club, past matron and 50 year member of Remington Eastern Star, and an active member and trustee secretary of the Remington United Methodist Church.

Rita has traveled in all 50 states as well as many foreign countries. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, reading, working with flowers, loved music, and memories of all her former students. Most of all, Rita cherished time spent with friends and family.

Surviving along with her husband are sons, Ronald (wife: Jean) Atkinson, and Dale Atkinson of Fowler; daughter, Barbara (husband: Rodney) Dowell of Valparaiso and daughter-in-law, Ellen of Remington. Also surviving are grandchildren, Tina, Beth, Denissa, Adam, Erik, Sarah, Jason, and Matthew; great-grandchildren, Kasey, Sydney, Bryce, Brock, Caleb, Alex, Mikayla, Acacia, Allynah, Nathaniel, Jeffry, Conner, Adalynn, and Olive.

Preceding her in death along with her parents is an infant brother; step-brother, Norman Alberts; son, Donald Atkinson.
