OBITUARY
S. MATSON DEAD

Prominent and Respected

-----------
FUNERAL IN BICKLETON SUNDAY
----------
On Wednesday evening about 6:30 o'clock
this community was deeply shocked to hear
that Mr. Stephen Matsen had died at his
ranch home, about four miles east of
Bickleton. Mr. Matsen was going about his
chores when the summons came. He was
seen to fall by some members of the family,
and they ran to his assistance, but he was
dead when they reached him. It is thought.
Dr. Brockman was called, but of course it
was too late to render assistance. Mr.
Matson had had some pain in the region of
his heart for some time, but it was not considered dangerous by himself or family.

Stephen Matsen was born in Denmark, March
2, 1853 and died on the anniversary of his
birth. He came to the United States when 20
years of age, he was in New Jersey one year,
going from here to California, and two years
later came to this section, settling down on a
farm near this town, and became one of our
most successful farmers and stock raisers,
owning and controlling about 1,000 acres of
land. He was beloved by all for his kindly
disposition and sterling worth. On Jan. 17,
1887, he was married to Mrs. Nels Brown.
To this union were born five children, two
girls and three boys.

March 17, 1889, Mr. Matsen joined the Methidist church here,
and was a loyal and true member, living
a true life. Two years ago he and his
family withdrew from the Methodist
church to become charter members of the
newly organized Danish Luthern church
established at the time.

In the death of Mr. Matsen the community
loses a beloved citizen, a good neighbor, and
the church to which he belonged an
honored and beloved brother. The bereft
family have the heart felt sympathy of the
entire community.

The funeral will be held in the Methodist
Chuch in Bickleton, Sunday, March 6, at
12 o'clock, conducted by pastor, Rev. W.
E. Ragan.
