"DAVID J. RANDALL GOES TO HIS REST.
PASSING OF RESPECTED RESIDENT OF THE PARKFIELD DISTRICT.
PARKFIELD. March 27. David J. Randall was born in St. Joseph county, Michigan, March 29, 1835. His parents moved from that state to Indiana in his childhood, where his boyhood was spent. He moved with his parents to Iowa in his early manhood, and enlisted in the service of his country in October 1861. He was wounded in the battle of Shilo and was discharged for inability in the latter part of 1862. He never entirely recovered from his wound. After his discharge he returned to his home in Iowa and on January 1, 1863, was married to Miss Minerva J. Ewing. The young couple resided in the same neighborhood until in 1889 they moved to Tacoma, Wash. From that place they came to Cholame valley the following year and have lived here for the past quarter of a century. On January 1, 1913, the friend and relatives of this well known couple gave them a reception and dinner at the hall. Such a banquet is seldom seen in a lifetime, and old and young made merry and tendered their felicitations to Mr. and Mrs. Randall on having pasted a half century of happy married life.
The subject of this sketch has been in failing health for several years, and at 2 p. m., March 22, 1916, quietly breathed his last, surrounded by his wife, his daughter, Mrs. T[heodore] H[arvey] Draper, and husband, and his son George R. Randall and wife and there three daughters, and several other relatives and friends. The late Mrs. Nancy Harlan [wife of William J. Harlan] was a sister of D. J. Randall. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. A. McGowan, and in honor of his service to his country Mrs. W. H. Smith of the Fairchild Circle in Pacific Grove read the flag burial service for the veterans by the Ladies of the Grand Army. This service is very impressive, and a beautiful silk flag was laid upon the casket and interred thereon. The body was laid to rest in the Todd cemetery [aka Parkfield Cemetery], and although the day was stormy, with an occasional shower of sleet and rain, many old neighbors, friends and relatives were present to pay their last tribute of respect The family has the sympathy of our people in this their hour of sorrow."
