Charlotte Louise Riley (Varlashkin) went to the Lord on April 14, 2017. She bravely battled heart-related illnesses, fighting off multiple strokes and a major heart attack.

She was born in San Antonio in 1929 to parents who instilled in her not only the value of hard work and self-sacrifice, but more importantly a deep love for Jesus. She was an excellent student and gifted musician, graduating from Brackenridge High School in 1946, then earning two degrees from Our Lady of the Lake University, a Bachelor of Arts in Music in 1950 and a Master of Education in School Administration in 1967.
She dedicated her life to educating children, as a music teacher, classroom teacher and principal, retiring in 1989. She also had a love for animals, babying her farm animals as a child and several pet dachshunds.

But the true loves of her life were her children and grandchildren. Raising a daughter and son on her own from the time they were young, she gave them all the love they could hope for, worked tirelessly to support them and provided for them through college and beyond. As grandchildren came, Granny was always present, offering to let them spend the night, where she entertained them with her patented thumb trick and they always awoke to frying bacon and egg breakfasts that have never been surpassed.

Summer vacations at South Padre Island were unforgettable gifts to her family. Memories were made every year without exception as children and grandchildren literally grew up knowing that a certainty in life was beach time with Granny. Sandcastles, body boarding, feeding seagulls, pancake breakfasts, beach lunches, spaghetti dinners, bayside fireworks and more filled those trips with Granny's love.

Louise was preceded in death by her loving parents, Peter Varlashkin and Lottie Riggs Swaim Varlashkin, and brother, Col Thomas Swaim, USAF, Ret. She is survived by her brother, Dr. Paul Varlashkin and his wife, Charlotte Varlashkin of Durham, NC, and sister-in-law Jean Swaim of Dallas. She lives on in the hearts of her children, Lisa Louise Riley Diamond and Andrew Miles Riley; their spouses, Tony Diamond and Brenda Dawson Riley and grandchildren, Thomas Anthony Diamond, Andrew Luke Diamond and wife Nicole Lynn Diamond, Sarah Elizabeth Diamond, Hannah Grace Riley and Mary Katherine Riley. Also missing her will be dear companion pets Molly and Bo.
