Richard Edward Ashley, 88, of Keokuk, IA, died Monday, October 9, 2017 at his home.

He was born on August 29, 1929 in Keokuk, IA, the son of John Raymond and Cleophus Gates Ashley.

On October 8, 1950, Richard was united in marriage to Helen Howell in Keokuk, IA. She preceded him in death on January 30, 2016.

Richard was a Veteran of the United States Army. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for wounds suffered in combat during the Korean War.

He had been employed by Keokuk Ferro-Sil and Jerry’s Radiator in Keokuk.

He is survived by his daughter, Joan Ashley of Keokuk, his son, Steve (Angel) Ashley of Hamilton, IL, two granddaughters, Bethanie (Phil) Berg of O’Fallon, MO and Leslie Ashley of Edwardsville, IL, one grandson, Brier Ashley of Hamilton, and two great-granddaughters, Madlyn Ashley and Arabella Berg.

He was also preceded in death by one granddaughter, Olivia Ashley and two brothers, John Ashley and Robert Ashley.

According to his wishes, Richard’s body was donated to the University of Iowa for anatomical and surgical study.
