Dorine Rose DeWitt Markham Brickey was born on May 24, 1931, the youngest of three children born to James J. and Myra D. Rose. She passed away on November 20, 2017, in Roseburg, Oregon.

She spent virtually all her life in Douglas County and was very proud of her deep roots there. At least three of her ancestors had Donation Land claims, including Aaron Rose her great-great-great-uncle. Throughout her childhood she enjoyed tagging along with her parents as her father played his fiddle at dances in a variety of places. This love of music and dancing continued throughout her life.

In 1952, she married Clyde DeWitt and their daughter Debra Jean was born in 1954. They divorced shortly thereafter. In 1959, Dorine married John H.(Jack) Markham, Jr., a widower with four children, Mary Ellen, John Robert, Kathleen Grace and James Lonel. They were married until Jack’s passing in 1994. In 2000, she married Wilfred (Bill) Brickey. He passed away in 2012.

Dorine’s life was busy with family and full of love. She was both a stay at home mom and a businesswoman, keeping the books for Jack’s businesses and later volunteering to keep the payroll for the Wildlife Safari. She later continued her support of the Safari with the Ladies Auxiliary.

Her hobbies included gardening, cooking, needlework, shopping and bridge. She was definitely an animal lover, ready to feed any stray she encountered. She also enjoyed travelling, making it to every continent except Antarctica. Even while in her eighties she traveled to the Galapagos Islands, combining travel with the animals she loved. Two trips to Africa did the same.

Dorine is survived by her sister Virginia Wright; her brother Charles Robert Rose, both of Roseburg; her children John (Priscilla) Markham of Prescott, AZ, Kathy (Marty) Aalto of Goodyear, AZ, Jim Markham and Debra Markham, both of Roseburg; also, 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. With one exception, all of these gathered for a family reunion at her home in July of 2017. She enjoyed the reunion very much and often bragged about the large attendance.

In keeping with Dorine’s love of the Wildlife Safari the family asks that you make donations in her name to Wildlife Safari, 1790 Safari Rd, Winston, OR 97496.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on February 17, 2018, at the Theater at the Wildlife Safari.
