Gary Wayne Sutton (Pee Wee) went home to be with the Lord Sunday, January 28, 2018, after battling throat cancer for 2 years at the age of 64. He was born in Edinburg, Texas on September 17, 1953 to Aubrey and Rose Sutton where he lived with his family at the Tennessee Gas Transmission Plant company housing 10 miles out of town, a place where he and older sister, Linda, had lots of room to play and get into mischief. At age 9, his dad was transferred to the East Bernard TGT Station 17 Plant, first living in Lissie, where they endured Hurricane Carla, a fire and welcomed the arrival of his sister, Elizabeth. In 1964, the family moved to East Bernard and lived a stone’s throw away from the Methodist Church.

Gary graduated from East Bernard High School in 1972 where he was a member of the East Bernard Brahma Band and stage band playing trumpet. He also played golf, tennis, and participated in the Spanish Club, Historian Club, Senior Play, UIL Solo and Ensemble contests, and was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

After graduation, he wanted to join the Marines and go to Vietnam, but it was not meant to be. He attended Wharton County Jr. College and later became a welder, working with the Reznicek Family. He then moved to Columbus and worked for an electrician for 15 years. Because of failing health, he retired and moved back to East Bernard where he lived with and cared for his mother. He loved to read, work crossword puzzles IN INK, play his guitar, listen to country music, drive around the countryside, and he especially loved his little dog, Rambo. He was the proud owner of a Harley Davidson motorcycle which he loved to ride. He enjoyed visiting with friends and family. Thanks to his photographic memory, Gary had a knack for remembering detail and loved to share with whoever would listen. Gary had a kind heart and was bent towards helping people in need.

In June 2016, Gary was diagnosed with throat cancer. He fought it courageously and endured the treatments without complaint. His ENT doctor called him a kind man and a fighter. The cancer went into remission for a year but, unfortunately, it returned, not curable. His family and friends will miss him, but we know that he is no longer suffering for which we are grateful to the Lord.

Gary is preceded in death by his father, Aubrey Sutton; grandparents, Moses and Elma Sutton, Salvatore and Marie Medeiros.

He is survived by his mother, Rose (Medeiros) Sutton; sister and brother-in-law, Linda (Sutton) and Walter Willis, Jr.; sister, Elizabeth Sutton; niece, Amanda (Willis) Everitt and husband, Michael Everitt; and great-niece, Victoria Grace Everitt; as well as aunts, Virginia Wilson and Irene Murray.

Visitation is scheduled for Saturday, February 3, 2018, from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church, 421 Pietzch St., East Bernard, TX 77435. A funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM followed by burial in the Methodist Cemetery in East Bernard.

The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations in Gary’s memory be made to the following: Houston Methodist Hospital Texas Medical Center for their dedicated care of Gary; The Semper Fi Fund at https://semperfifund.org/ because although Gary did not join the Marines he will always be a Marine in his heart…"Oorah" !
