Michael was born the ninth child of Daniel A. and Mary E. (Ragan) Mathers in Heartwell, NE. He moved with his family to North Platte in 1910. He was a retired rancher. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Thomas, Grover, Martin, Charles, and Clarence, sisters, Mae McCroden, Ida Lilley and Grace Grieve.

Surviving Michael are his sisters, Rose Mathers and Agnes Hollenbeck.
