Diane was an only child until she was 18 and her brother, Kenny, was born. She attended Norview High School in Norfolk, VA and Blue Mountain College in Blue Mountain, MS where she majored in Home Economics and Old Testament. She worked for VEPCO as a Home Economist for several years after graduating from college. She also worked as a teacher and substitute teacher eventually teaching middle school English. In the last years of her life she became a docent for the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, VA. She often said that being a docent was the most enjoyable and rewarding job she ever had.

Diane had three children. Her middle child, a son - Judson, died at age 15 in Jacksonville, Florida from injuries sustained from a bicycle/car accident. He is buried in the Rosewood Memorial Park in Virginia Beach, VA alongside his father, Eric Raymond Bowden.
