Writer, literary journalist, and man of letters, best known for his The English Novel (1954). His best novel was All In a Lifetime (1959). His well-regarded memoir entitled As I Walked Down New Grub Street (1982) contains literary reminiscences of the leading writers of the day. Allen was a member of the Birmingham Group, a group of authors writing from the 1930s to the 1950s who lived and occasionally got together in and around Birmingham.
